When I started writing, it was vital to me that the content of my work be approached from a very Sex-Positive philosophy. However, I soon realized this added to my writing challenges since many have either never heard, or may have misinterpreted, what that means.
Despite these challenges, I have done my best to produce work that keeps my personal views and beliefs on sex and intimacy with this in mind. For clarification, I have chosen to give my readers a brief explanation of my interpretation of what it means to be Sex-Positive.
- SEX IS NATURAL…Sex is a strong physiological force in our lives, much like the need for food and water.
- SEX IS A VITAL COMPONENT TO OUR HEALTH…Sexual Health should be treated with the same importance as our Physical, Mental, and Emotional/Spiritual Health.
- SEX SHOULD BE AFFIRMING…Sex is best when treated as a positive part of our lived experience, not one to be seen as a dirty or shameful topic only acknowledged secretly.
- SEX REQUIRES RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY…Like many parts of our life, sex should be approached with a “Do No Harm” ethos for ourselves and our partners. Nothing should be done at the expense or hurt of those involved. This includes the need for engaging in safe-sex practices, open and positive communication, and consent.
- SEX IS EVOLUTIONARY…Our experiences in our sexuality are most likely going to be very different at different stages of our life. This is because our attitudes, beliefs, preferences, and capabilities will most likely change and evolve over time. We must remain open and flexible to these changes, while accepting and respecting how each stage shapes us.
- SEX IS INCLUSIVE…We each bring our own experiences to the table when it comes to sex. While we are not required to agree with or enjoy all facets of sexuality, it is important to see everyone as an equal sexual being, and to have a community of respect.
I hope this gives everyone a better idea of where I am coming from, and that it inspires others to consider their views on the subject. Much love and Think (Sex) Positive, My Friends!
